Sit in the bleachers at any Little League or Soccer game and you will see almost as many grandparents as parents cheering on the teams. Grandparents have an unequaled enthusiasm for attending and participating in activities, sports and fitness opportunities with their grandchildren, especially grandpa!
As I think of my own life, it may be the additional time that grandpas have after their own children are grown and out of the house or the excitement in sharing an interest or hobby with a younger person. On the other hand, maybe we as grandpas just have more energy when the time spent with an overactive grandchild is limited and that they will be going home afterward. Whatever the reason, grandpas, just want to be a kid again, seem to be very much a part of the activities of their grandchildren.
Grandpas Need to Be a Role Model
With the many recent reports of increased obesity among children in our society, it is very important for grandpas to encourage increased activity in their grandchildren’s daily lives. Poor nutrition and a sedentary lifestyle lead to overweight and unfit children. Grandpas can improve those statistics with activities that increase their grandchildren’s fitness levels beginning at an early age and continuing to adulthood.
Those activities may vary depending on the age of the child and the interests of both the grandpa and the grandchild. For example, a baby is perfect for a nice walk with a stroller or jogger. All of the new equipment available for babies these days allows ease in walking, running and bike riding. Baby no longer inhibit daily exercise, but rather enhances the experience. I know that when my oldest granddaughter Rachael was small it was daily wagon rides from grandpa’s house to her house! It helped that my daughter and son-in-law lived a few houses up the street. Oh those memories!
For another great experience with grandchildren this age, try a trip to the park. All the climbing, digging and swinging is just right for an active toddler. Some supervision is required of course, but much of the enjoyment comes from watching. I would attend my youngest daughters Soccer games and slip over with Rachael to play. Older children gladly participate as well. There is always something to try when a swing and slide are involved. It is also a great place to meet other grandpas.
As the grandchildren grow older, there are many more activities, and grandpas are great teachers. They are more than willing to share their own interests and talents with their grandchildren whether it is in golf, bowling, ping-pong, tennis or especially fishing. All of these are activities that grandchildren relish with enthusiasm and carry with them the rest of their lives. How many adults claim they first were first introduced to a sport or a particular skill from a grandpa? Many grateful adults learned skills they use throughout their lifetimes from patient grandpas who always have something to share.
Moreover, how many grandchildren remember a weekend of camping and fishing with grandpas? There are so many activities that grandpas are able to share with grandchildren, providing not only hours of fun but also educational opportunities as well.
Grandpas You Must Show Your Support
Of course, there is nothing quite as special as having grandpa in the cheering section during a game. Whether it is a game of soccer, football, basketball, baseball or a dance recital, grandpas make the event extra special. It is not only a time for pride and cheers but also an opportunity to meet other parents and grandparents who share the same experience. It is a time to socialize and build memories!
As the grandchildren get older, fitness activities bring an even more special bond. Those activities become a time to talk, share and become acquainted with that unique and special person known as your grandchild. Walks, sporting events, both as spectator and as participant, games of chess, badminton, dancing or horseshoes provide an opportunity for conversation.
I fully believe that grandpas are special people for teens and young adults, not only for their inspiration and their support but also for their advice and teaching. Teens will listen to a grandpa even when they are reluctant to hear a parent’s opinion. Fitness activities are the perfect openings for conversations about important topics regarding life.
Therefore, whenever grandpas and grandchildren are involved in activities, remember it is about bonding, sharing knowledge, appreciation, conversation and pride as well as fitness. That is why I love being a grandpa!!

Mel Feller Looks at Grandpa’s Rules
In my grandpa’s day, it was understood that children had certain responsibilities as members of the family. They “earned” their privileges by fulfilling their responsibilities first. The idea behind this rule is that you acknowledge something the child would like to do as the second step in a process. You define the first step as a chore, action or activity that must be done before the privilege is granted.
The benefits to this approach are threefold. First, your request is very specific, and thus can be understood by your child. Second, you are acknowledging your child’s wants and needs at the same time that you are stating your wants and needs. Third, you are approaching the issue in a way that invites your child to cooperate. Here is how it works:
You may ________ after you __________.
You may play outside after you do the dishes.
You may watch a movie after you do your homework.
We will read a story after you put your pajamas on.
As soon as you scoop the cat litter, you can play your new computer game.
An added benefit to using Grandpa’s Rule is that it eliminates the need to use “fighting words.” Fighting words are those that start a battle even before the rest of the sentence is heard — words such as, you cannot, Do not, No and Stop!
Notice how the choice of words affects the feeling conveyed by these requests:
You cannot go outside until you finish your homework.
Yes, you can go outside just as soon as you finish your homework.
Do not eat that cookie until after your dinner.
Yes, you can have a cookie right after dinner.
No, you cannot go to Jimmy’s house.
You can go to Jimmy’s house on Saturday, after soccer practice.
As you can see, Grandpa’s rule allows you to use positive communication while being very specific about what you want. Moreover, the best thing is — it works!

Entrepreneurialism is defined as starting new businesses, or getting involved with new ventures or ideas. An example of entrepreneurialism is starting new businesses and always being involved in investing in the latest ventures.

Therefore, let us begin our insight into that of being an entrepreneur.
Entrepreneurship is a French word meaning “one who undertakes innovations, finance and business acumen in an effort to transform innovations into economic goods. “ This may result an entirely new enterprise or may be part of revitalizing a mature organization in response to a perceived opportunity or possible gap in the market. The innovation piece of the process then means that there is always some level of creativity or new thinking, and not just a “me-too” approach or one that offers very little that is different.
Naturally, entrepreneurial activities can be substantially different depending on the type of organization being started. Entrepreneurship ranges in scale from solo projects (even involving the entrepreneur only part-time) to major undertakings creating many job opportunities. Small entrepreneurial activities may involve establishing “trade” businesses (such as starting a plumbing, carpentry, personal coaching or hairdressing business, for example). Larger or more significant entrepreneurial activities could involve a new manufacturing process or a very new technology offering, for example.
Smaller entrepreneurial businesses may need only limited financing to get them off the ground or need only relatively minor loans to get them up and running. However, many “high value” entrepreneurial ventures seek venture capital or “angel funding” (seed money) in order to raise capital to build the business or popularize the approach.
What traits do entrepreneurs have?
A definition of an “entrepreneur” (which also stresses the need for innovation) is as follows:
“An innovator who establishes a new business offering, new or existing products or services for the reward of profit.” Entrepreneurs generally have strong beliefs about market opportunities and willingly accept a high level of personal, professional and financial risk. An entrepreneur possesses a variety of different characteristics that provide a skill set for achieving success and a high level of reward.
According to many research studies of successful entrepreneurs, there are a number of traits that are common to these individuals. A few of the most common traits, which emerge, are:
  • Independence — the desire to be his or her own boss.
  • Self-Discipline — the way these people trained or equipped themselves to meet certain goals.
  • Persistence — never showing discouragement, always thinking of new ways to approach a problem and acting on ideas.
  • Creativity— the ability to come up with clever or unusual but workable solutions.
  • Hard Work — being capable of doing the work needed consistently and seeming to enjoy it.
  • Motivation — the mental and physical drive to succeed, to accomplish chosen tasks on his or her own terms.
  • Confidence — having a firm belief in his or her own capabilities and his or her chances of success.
  • Willingness to Take Risks — the readiness to sacrifice his or her own financial security, if need be, in order to accomplish his or her goals (especially at the outset).
  • Communication Skills — the ability to express him or herself well and to understand others so that ideas can be shared.
Who can be an entrepreneur?
Becoming an entrepreneur is theoretically an option for everyone but many are reluctant to make this choice. Let’s therefore explore the facts and the myths that exist about entrepreneurship.
Research, conducted by the Warwick Business School in the UK, suggests that the average entrepreneur or founder of a new enterprise is married (over 75% are), has children, and worked for many years at a larger company or for someone else before branching out and starting his or her own business.
Although it varies according to the type of entrepreneurial business, across all categories, around 75% of entrepreneurs are men and 25% are women. However, those women who do set up and run new enterprises have equivalent levels of success when compared to men.
Here are a few other statistics to consider:
  • 65% of existing entrepreneurs have at least one child when they launch their first business.
  • Over 70% of entrepreneurs come from middle class backgrounds.
  • 40% of entrepreneurs are first-born children.
  • Over 60% of new entrepreneurs were the first ones in their family to launch a business.
  • Less than half of the parents of entrepreneurs had a college or advanced degree.
  • More than three-quarters of entrepreneurs worked for someone else for at least six years before launching their business.
  • 20% of successful entrepreneurs had engaged in some kind of entrepreneurial activity in their youth or teenage years
  • 70% of entrepreneurs use personal savings as a main source of funding for their first business. Even in subsequent start-ups, more than half of the entrepreneurs rely on their personal savings.
  • Friends and family are a primary source of funding for around 10% of entrepreneurs.
  • Bank loans are a primary source of funding for around 15% of entrepreneurs.
  • Venture capital and private/angel investments clearly play a role in start-ups but only for a few entrepreneurs. Only 10% receive venture capital, and 10% receive angel financing.
Summary
An entrepreneurial lifestyle is not for everyone but if do you will need to have the temperament for the task and be prepared to perform many roles and/or wear many hats. As the statistics above indicate, there are a number of common characteristics of entrepreneurs but none of these needs to be an inhibitor if an individual is truly committed to the cause and has a good idea that they want to personally take to market.
